I am not a good bowler. Never have been. Likely never will be. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I rarely go bowling and I never practice. Recently at a local bowling alley with my two sons, my eldest whooped up on old dad while my youngest unashamedly established himself as an avid bumper bowler. (Had I been humble like him, the bumpers would have improved my game. But that's dad life.) My little boy recognized he did not yet have the skills and reps required to be a proficient bowler, but knew he could improve--even succeed--with a little help.
Several years ago, I learned a similar lesson in the spiritual discipline area of journaling. Though you won't find a "Thou Shalt Journal" verse in Scripture, I have found the practice helpful for steadily growing in the likeness of Christ. This led me to develop a journal that works like a spiritual bumper lane to help folks mature. Admittedly, the project has been in the vault for quite some time after its first printing. Recently teaching a youth Sunday school class prompted me to dust it off and take a fresh look. It amazed me that within 10 minutes students were flooding their handouts with soul-enriching, Christ-honoring content. They were genuinely amazed at all they had done in a short span of time and were thrilled to consider what might occur if the habit was repeated daily. Perhaps you will benefit in the same way.
Lord willing, a revised and expanded edition will soon be available for purchase. But for now, take a look at a sample of the first edition HERE. This resource could just be the ticket for a more robust devotional life.
Happy journaling!
