It has been several months since the elders brought a teaching series entitled, “Membership & Immersion: Baptized Into One Body.” The series was designed to provide a theological foundation for proposed changes to our by-laws that we believe will bring our membership practices more closely in line with biblical teaching. The messages worked together to make the biblical case that the baptism of a believer without formal inclusion in a local body is a concept foreign to Scripture. The nature of the church, the nature of baptism, and the nature of church membership indicate that baptism cannot be biblically separated from membership.
As we intend to more formally explain those proposed changes at the coming members’ meeting, the elders thought it would be helpful to summarize the content of that teaching series here on this blog. Each day this week, we will post an article summarizing the content of one message in the sermon series. The schedule is below, along with a link to the associated sermon.
Tuesday - Gospel Life in the Household of God (Pastor Jason)
Wednesday - What is Membership? (Pastor Greg)
Thursday - What is Baptism? (Pastor Greg)
Friday - A Pilgrim’s Progress: The Believer’s Life in Christ and the Church (Pastor John)
As always, the elders are happy to talk and answer any questions you may have concerning these things. Our desire is to be as faithful as possible to the teaching of Scripture. The more closely we align our practice with the Word, the healthier will be our local expression of the body of Christ.
