All Must Be Well: Brief Reminders for Weary Saints

Job instructed us of the brevity of life and enduring turmoil:

Job 14:1 – Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble. He comes out like a flower and withers; he flees like a shadow and continues not.

John had the honor of penning Jesus’ commanding perspective:

John 16:33b - In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

Paul joyfully propagated the potency of Christ’s love:

Romans 8:38-39 – For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The saints of the Lord await a glorious, promised, eternal future, but present suffering is not a waste:

2 Corinthians 4:16-17 – So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but things that are unseen are eternal.

Fast-forward to the 17th century and reflect on the words of hymnwriter Isaac Watts:

Afflictions and Death Under Providence

Not from the dust affliction grows,
Nor troubles rise by chance;
Yet we are born to cares and woes,
A sad inheritance.

As sparks break out from burning coals
And still are upwards borne,
So grief is rooted in our souls,
And man grows up to mourn.

Yet with my God I leave my cause
And trust His promised grace;
He rules me by his well-known laws
Of love and righteousness.

Not all the pain that e’er I bore
Shall spoil my future peace,
For death and hell can do no more
Than what my Father please.

Follow the timeline once more to the 19th century and ponder the words of a lesser-known hymnwriter, Mary Bowley-Peters:

All Must Be Well

Through the love of God our Savior,
All will be well;
Free and changeless is His favor,
All is well;
Precious is the blood that healed us,
Perfect is the grace that sealed us,
Strong the hand stretched forth to shield us,
All must be well.

Though we pass through tribulation,
All will be well;
Ours is such a full salvation,
All is well;
Happy still in God confiding,
Fruitful if in Christ abiding,
Steadfast through the Spirit’s guiding,
All must be well.

We expect a bright tomorrow,
All will be well;
Faith can sing through days of sorrow,
All is well;
On our Father’s love relying,
Jesus every need supplying,
Yes in living and in dying,
All must be well.

The Lord knows every tossing and tear, weary saint (Ps 56:8).

The Father is your comfort (2 Cor 1:3).

Jesus is your life (Col 3:4).

The Spirit is present in your weakness (Rom 8:26).

In joy and in sorrow, may the Lord always be your hiding place and shield (Ps 119:114). May trials be joyful, and steadfastness abound (Jas 1:2). All must be well.
